Wynne must not delay correct sex designation on birth certificates: MPP DiNovo

QUEEN'S PARK – Parkdale-High Park MPP and NDP LGBTQ issues critic Cheri DiNovo demanded that the Wynne Liberals not delay Ontarians the right to correct their sex designation on their birth certificate any further.

“In May, Joshua M. Ferguson, a queer non-binary person applied to change their sex designation on their birth certificate. Three months later, Joshua has still not received an amended birth certificate reflecting their correct sex designation,” said DiNovo.

Ontario passed Toby’s Law in 2012, adding gender identity and gender expression to the Human Rights Code.

“It’s been five years since Toby’s Law was passed, but non-binary individuals are still not being afforded those rights,” said DiNovo. “The Wynne government has acknowledged the risk individuals face when their IDs do not accurately reflect the correct sex designation. Why is the government delaying issuing Joshua an amended birth certificate?”
