Parental equality finally law in Ontario

QUEEN’S PARK — Today, Ontario’s New Democrats celebrated the passage of All Families Are Equal Act, 2016, which grants equal parental rights to all families.

“We are pleased that LGBTQ families finally have equal rights,” said NDP LGBTQ Issues Critic Cheri DiNovo. DiNovo, the MPP for Parkdale-High Park, introduced an earlier version of the bill, named Cy and Ruby’s Act, giving parental recognition to LGBTQ parents. “This change was decades overdue,” DiNovo added.

Earlier this year, LGBTQ families issued a Charter challenge against the Ontario government and the courts ordered the government to bring in legislation to end discrimination against LGBTQ parents by September 30, 2016.

“This is a great victory for Ontario families, and for human rights,” said Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath. “Cheri DiNovo worked closely with the community, and our fellow New Democrats, to see this important issue addressed; I’m grateful for her efforts, and the efforts of the community to bring this law to fruition.”
